The Trump administration’s unclear stance on bilateral defense and aerospace cooperation has led to uncertainty. This affects treaty allies and partners, including India. As a result, U.S. firms have adopted a wait-and-watch approach.
Uncertainty Over Future Defence Ties
A senior executive from a major U.S. aerospace firm said that companies expect to gain clarity on Trump’s approach soon. This will happen within the first 60-90 days of his presidency. “Whether Trump continues with the improving aerospace and defence relations with India remains to be seen,” the executive said.
‘America First’ and Its Impact on India
Trump, who took office as the 47th U.S. President on January 20, has already signaled a return to his ‘America First’ economic policies. His administration has initiated tariff actions against key U.S. trade partners like Canada and Mexico. Similar moves in the aerospace sector discourage outsourcing of part manufacturing to India. This trend has strengthened over the last decade.
While India remains a key defence partner for the U.S., companies are cautious. They expect potential shifts in policy. These changes will impact joint ventures, technology transfers, and supply chain collaborations.
The global defence landscape is evolving. All eyes are now on Washington. People want to see if the new administration will keep the momentum of growing defence ties with India. Alternatively, it will chart a different course.
