NGT Flags High Fecal Bacteria in Ganga at Prayagraj, Questions UPPCB Over Lapses
Tribunal Raises Alarm Over Unsafe Water Quality Amid Maha Kumbh Mela
The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has raised serious concerns. They noted the presence of high levels of fecal bacteria in the Ganga at Prayagraj. Several locations fail to meet the primary water quality standards for bathing. The observations came from an NGT bench. This bench included Chairperson Justice Prakash Shrivastava, Judicial Member Justice Sudhir Agarwal, and Member A Senthil Vel. They heard a plea about untreated sewage being dumped into the Ganga and Yamuna. This occurs especially during major religious events like the Magh Mela and Kumbh Mela.
Pollution Levels Exceed Safe Limits
A compliance report was submitted by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB). It highlighted alarming pollution levels:
• The river water did not meet the Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD) criteria. This issue persisted until January 13. Improvements were noted only after freshwater intrusion at upstream locations.
• The fecal coliform levels remained non-conforming to bathing criteria, indicating continued contamination.
Strong Observation of NGT: Unsafe Water for Pilgrims
The tribunal expressed concern. It noted that millions of devotees are taking holy dips in the Ganga during the Maha Kumbh Mela. This includes auspicious bathing days. These activities exacerbate fecal contamination levels.
UPPCB Fails to Send Action Report
Despite an earlier directive, the Uttar Pradesh Pollution Control Board (UPPCB) was incapable of providing a comprehensive action-taken report. Instead, it submitted only water test results, which confirmed high fecal contamination. The UPPCB has now sought an additional day to submit the report.
NGT Summons UPPCB Officials
The NGT is displeased with the delay. It has summoned the Member Secretary of UPPCB and other responsible officials. They are to appear virtually on the next hearing date. The tribunal is expected to take further action based on their response.
Millions of pilgrims continue to take ritual baths in the Ganga. The findings of NGT underscore an urgent need for stricter monitoring. Immediate intervention is needed to guarantee water safety.
