Catastrophic Crash Minutes After Takeoff
An Air India Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner with 242 people on board crashed shortly after takeoff. The incident occurred at Ahmedabad’s Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport on Thursday. The plane was en route to London’s Gatwick Airport. The aircraft, identified as VT-ANB, issued a distress “Mayday” call moments after takeoff from runway 23 at 1:39 p.m. (IST), then lost all contact with air traffic control.
Rare Aviation Failure Under Scrutiny
Aviation experts suspect a dual-engine failure as the likely cause of the plane crash. This is an extremely rare occurrence in modern aviation. Global safety studies estimate the probability of both engines failing simultaneously as once in a billion flying hours.
“This is among the rarest of the rare events,” said an aviation safety analyst.
The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) is conducting a formal investigation. They aim to determine the precise sequence of failures that led to the tragedy.
Devastation on the Ground
The aircraft went down in a civilian zone, crashing into a doctors’ residential hostel near the airport. Emergency crews reported clearing around 80% of the impacted structure. Thick smoke, flaming debris, and twisted metal were visible as firefighters and disaster teams worked through the wreckage.
Casualties and Nationalities
Authorities confirmed the presence of 217 adults, 11 children, and 14 crew members aboard. Among them, 169 were Indian nationals, 53 British citizens, seven Portuguese, and one Canadian.
Ahmedabad’s Civil Hospital has so far received 133 bodies, most of which are severely burnt. The death toll is expected to rise as recovery operations continue.
Grim Scenes and Heroic Rescue Efforts
Videos from the crash site show a large fireball and dark smoke plumes moments after the plane disappeared from view. Emergency responders worked rapidly to evacuate victims, with stretchers, ambulances, and firefighting units deployed in full force. Hospitals across Ahmedabad remain on emergency alert.
Nation Responds to Tragedy
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has ordered all necessary assistance for rescue and relief efforts. The Ministry of Civil Aviation and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) are on-site coordinating operations. The Adani Group, which operates the airport, has suspended all flight services at the terminal until further notice.
Gautam Adani, Chairman of the Adani Group, expressed his condolences:
“We are shocked and deeply saddened by the tragedy of Air India Flight 171. Our hearts go out to the families who have suffered an unimaginable loss.”
Investigation and Future Action
Flightradar24 confirmed that the last signal from the aircraft was received just seconds after departure. A full investigation has been launched, with black box recovery and analysis expected to provid more clarity.
Officials are piecing together the moments leading to the crash. This rare and devastating incident is sending shockwaves through aviation circles. It is prompting calls for a detailed technical review of the aircraft’s systems.
