Aerial Firefighting Team Disperses DCP to Control Blaze
Early this morning, the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) carried out a determined operation. They continued firefighting efforts aboard container vessel MV WAN HAI 503. They worked despite turbulent sea conditions. A specially trained crew was deployed. The team comprised a pilot and two aircrew divers. They used an Indian Air Force MI-17 helicopter to conduct aerial firefighting. The team successfully dropped 1,000 kilograms of Dry Chemical Powder (DCP) directly over the fire’s hotspot. They aimed to control the smoldering blaze.
Vessel Held in Position to Prevent Coastal Hazard
In an effort to prevent environmental damage near the coastline, the ICG is maintaining the vessel’s position using a towline. This allows firefighting efforts to proceed while minimizing drift toward land. The coordinated response includes continuous surveillance of the vessel’s condition to ensure the fire does not reignite or worsen.

Fire Mostly Contained but Smoke Signals Ongoing Risk
The flames on the exterior of the vessel have been brought under control. However, thick smoke continues to rise from the ship. This indicates residual internal heat and the potential presence of metallic fire. These conditions have prompted continued caution, with ICG units remaining on standby to respond swiftly to any escalation.
High Vigilance Maintained as Operations Continue
The Indian Coast Guard has confirmed that firefighting efforts remain active. All deployed personnel and equipment are on high alert. The operation demonstrates the ICG’s commitment to maritime safety and environmental protection, even under adverse weather and operational challenges.
