Kishtwar Cloudburst Sparks Flash Flood, Bodies Recovered, Yatra Suspended

Massive cloudburst is reported in J&K, sparking flash floods in Chosoti, a small village in J&K. 

At least 46 people, most of them pilgrims, were killed in flash floods on the Machail Mata Yatra route at Chosoti village in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kishtwar district on Thursday afternoon. More than 100 people are injured. Over 160 people have been rescued so far. Due to flash floods Machail Mata Yatra, an annual  yatra which en-routes Chosoti, in Kishtwar district is obstructed.

CM Omar Abdullah reports Home Minister Amit Shah about Disaster

Omar Abdullah, CM of J&k, briefed Union Home minister Amit Shah. He informed him on the scale of devastation happening in Chosoti. He also updated on the ongoing rescue operations. “I just spoke to the Union home minister, Amit Shah. I briefed him about the developing situation in Kishtwar region of Jammu. The news is grim and accurate, verified information from the area hit by the cloud burst is slow in arriving. All possible resources are being mobilised from within and beyond J&K to manage the rescue operations. The government will share information as and when possible,” the CM posted on X.

Union minister, Jitender also expressed condolences on the incident.

“Just now spoke to DC Kishtwar Shri Pankaj Kumar Sharma after receiving an urgent message from LoP #JammuAndKashmir and local MLA Shri Sunil Kumar Sharma. Massive cloud burst in Chosoti area, which could result in substantial casualty. Administration has immediately swung into” he remarked.

Disaster Management Forces in Action

Authorities have sprung up into affected area immediately after the Disaster and rescue operations have begun. Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha expressed condolences for the affected families. He ordered immediate rescue operations in the affected area by NDRF, SDRF, Army, Police, and Civil administration.

Authorities are assessing the damage, providing medical aids, and continuing the rescue operations in further affected areas. Chosotiis a last motorable settlement before Machail Mata shrine. Therefore, Machail Mata yatra which happens annually is suspended. 

All possible relief and rescue operations are underway.
