Many Families Feared Trapped due to Recent Cloudburst in Rudraprayag

Rudraprayag, Uttarakhand was hit with a cloudburst on Thursday night leaving several families trapped and caused multiple injuries, officials said.

Chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami said debris flows blocked several areas and left many stranded. Rescue and relief operations were under way through the night.

In a post on ‘X’, he said a distressing report indicates cloudbursts occurred in the Bareth Dungar Tok area. This area is under the Buskedar tehsil of Rudraprayag district. Another cloudburst took place in the Deval area of Chamoli district. As a result, some families have been trapped due to debris flow.

“Relief and rescue operations are underway by the local administration. I am in constant contact with officials in this regard. I have issued necessary instructions to the Disaster Secretary and District Magistrates. These instructions ensure the effective conduct of rescue operations. I pray to Baba Kedar for the safe well-being of all,” he added further.

This is the second cloudburst to hit Uttarakhand this week. Earlier, heavy rains in Chamoli buried parts of the Tharali market and tehsil complex under debris.

Roads have been obstructed in multiple places between Sirobagad, Bansawada (Syalsaud), and Kund to Chopta in Rudraprayag, authorities said. In Chamoli, water levels in rivers have reached dangerous levels. Residents near the rivers have been directed to evacuate. “All people living in houses built along the riverbanks, please move immediately. The Chamoli Police said on X to relocate to safe locations.”

Rudraprayag Severely Effected

A similar directive has been issued in Rudraprayag as well. “The Rudraprayag Police and administrative teams are advising the general public to stay away from the riverbanks. They urge people to relocate to safe areas,” the Rudraprayag Police said in a tweet.

As the levels of river Alaknanda have risen, water has flowed onto roads. This situation has completely blocked the Badrinath highway between Srinagar and Rudraprayag. Traffic has been stopped at safe places besides alert locations. Arrangements are being made to send the pilgrims forward through alternative routes. Police has also been deployed for security purposes.

There has been some damage due to debris triggered by the cloudburst in Rudraprayag. Rescue and relief operations have been initiated. District Magistrate Rudraprayag Prateek Jain stays in constant contact with the officials from the disaster control room. This update was provided by the district administration.
