Strong Denouncement of Biased Findings
New Delhi — The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has firmly rejected the 2025 Annual Report. This report was published by the United States Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF). The MEA has labeled it as biased, politically charged, and misleading.
In an official statement on March 26, MEA spokesperson Shri Randhir Jaiswal criticized the report. He stated that it distorts facts. He accused it of attempting to undermine India’s pluralistic values. “USCIRF misrepresents India’s multicultural society repeatedly. This misrepresentation is not based on genuine concerns. Instead, it reflects a clear political agenda,” he remarked.
Upholding India’s Commitment to Religious Harmony
Jaiswal highlighted that India, home to 1.4 billion people from diverse faiths, remains deeply committed to safeguarding religious freedoms and democratic principles. He further accused the USCIRF of ignoring the inclusive nature of Indian society. He stated that they present a selective narrative influenced by external political motivations.
Sovereignty Can’t Be Questioned
The spokesperson emphasized that reports like these can’t challenge India’s sovereignty or democratic framework. He continued by saying, “The USCIRF should be labeled as an entity of concern. It continuously mischaracterizes India.”
Allegations Made by USCIRF
The USCIRF’s report alleged that religious freedom in India worsened in 2024, citing rising violence and discrimination against minority communities. It also criticized the application of anti-terror laws. The report raised concerns over the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA). These measures, it claimed, were used to suppress dissent and target certain groups.
MEA’s Firm Rebuttal
Responding to these claims, the MEA dismissed the accusations as exaggerated and inaccurate. The ministry pointed out that India’s constitution and legal systems provide strong protections for all religious groups. Additionally, it accused the USCIRF of selectively presenting incidents. It claimed the incidents fit a preconceived narrative. The accusation ignored India’s continued efforts to foster religious coexistence.
India Reaffirms Its Stand
India’s response underscores its rejection of external interference in domestic matters. The government reiterated its dedication to maintaining religious harmony and protecting democratic values. The statement concluded with a strong message. It emphasized that politically motivated reports cannot tarnish the image of India’s democratic institutions. These reports also cannot affect its enduring commitment to unity in diversity.
