A video from Ratnagiri, Maharashtra, shows a group attempting to ram a mosque gate with a tree trunk. This incident has ignited a heated debate online. The footage led to allegations of vandalism. However, local police clarified that there was no forced entry. The situation remains under control.
The incident took place on March 12 during the annual Shimga procession, a traditional Holi celebration in the Konkan region. As part of the ritual, participants carry a tree trunk and place it at religious sites along the route. However, this year, tensions escalated. Some individuals allegedly used the trunk to strike the mosque gate. The gate was reportedly shut. Sloganeering followed, prompting swift police intervention.
Superintendent of Police Dhananjay Kulkarni stated, “The tree trunk is traditionally placed at various religious sites, including the mosque. There was no attack as claimed. Some slogans were raised, and a case has been registered.” Police confirmed an FIR against 13 individuals under Section 135 of the Maharashtra Police Act for unlawful assembly.
Political reactions have been swift. Shiv Sena MLA Nilesh Rane dismissed the incident as exaggerated, alleging that certain groups were fueling unnecessary tension. “The procession followed tradition, but the mosque’s gate was closed this year, which led to a misunderstanding,” he said. In contrast, AIMIM leader Asaduddin Owaisi called for strict legal action, questioning the government’s response.
Advocate Owais Pechkar argued that disrupting prayers with a tree trunk was not part of any tradition. He demanded stronger charges against those involved. Meanwhile, police have warned against spreading misinformation and urged citizens to maintain peace.
The situation in Ratnagiri remains calm. However, the incident has sparked a broader debate on religious sensitivities. It also raises concerns regarding law enforcement. Additionally, it questions the role of political narratives in communal harmony.
