Sharjeel Imam Charged Over 2019 Jamia Nagar Riots

New Delhi, March 9, 2025 – Delhi Saket court has ordered the framing of charges against 11 accused. These include Sharjeel Imam and Aasif Iqbal Tanha. The charges are in connection with the 2019 Jamia Nagar violence case. At the same time, 14 individuals, including Safa-ur-Rehman, have been discharged from the case.

The Saket court directed the accused to be charged for offenses. These include unlawful assembly, rioting, promoting enmity, conspiracy, and attempt to commit culpable homicide. These charges fall under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). They also fall under the Prevention of Damage to Public Property Act.

Court’s Observations on Sharjeel Imam

The court noted that Sharjeel Imam was not only an instigator but also a key conspirator behind the violence. It observed that his speeches were designed to provoke hatred. They incited violence, making him liable under multiple provisions of the IPC.

The court remarked:
• Imam’s “chakka jaam” (road blockade) call was not peaceful but rather a deliberate act of provocation.
• His hate speech fueled communal divisions and incited violent mob activity.
• A road blockade in a city like Delhi could cause medical emergencies. This endangers lives and potentially leads to culpable homicide.

The Jamia Nagar violence case is part of a larger probe into the anti-CAA protests of 2019. During these protests, several incidents of rioting and clashes with law enforcement were reported. With the court now ordering the framing of charges, the legal proceedings against the accused will move forward.
