On May 20, Raja and Sonam set off for their honeymoon in Meghalaya with a one-way ticket. Unknown to Raja, three contract killers were trailing them. As per sources familiar with the investigation, the group reached a secluded spot during their trek. Sonam pretended to lag behind due to exhaustion. She suddenly shouted, “Kill him.” That was the signal for the assailants to strike.
The Mastermind Behind the Scenes
While the killers carried out the brutal crime, the alleged mastermind, Sonam’s lover Raj, remained far from the scene. According to Shillong Police, Raj did not travel to Meghalaya. However, he was coordinating with Sonam. He played a key role in planning the attack.

Weeks after the murder, Sonam was found unconscious at a roadside eatery in Ghazipur on June 8. She was taken to the local medical college for treatment and later surrendered to the police. Sonam claimed she was drugged and brought to Ghazipur to make it seem like she had been abducted.
Uttar Pradesh ADG (Law and Order) Amitabh Yash said Sonam tried to stage herself as a victim. She believed this tactic would help her evade suspicion. “She miscalculated and didn’t understand how the police operate. Her plan failed,” he said, praising the work of the Meghalaya Police handling the case.
Clues Hidden in a Final Phone Call
A call made by Raja’s mother to the couple before they went missing is now under scrutiny. The conversation appeared casual, but investigators believe it may contain important clues. During the call, Raja’s mother noticed Sonam was breathless and sounded tired. Sonam explained they were climbing a steep path through a forest. They wanted to see a waterfall. She complained that Raja insisted on the trek despite her objections.
Interestingly, Raja did not speak to his mother during the call. This raised suspicions about whether he was already injured or worse.
