Former Indian captain MS Dhoni expressed deep gratitude. He was inducted into the ICC Hall of Fame. This marks a significant moment in his illustrious cricketing career. The announcement was made during a star-studded ceremony at the iconic Abbey Road Studios in London.
A Star Among Legends
Dhoni was one of seven cricketers honoured during the event titled ‘A Day with the Legends’. He joined an elite list. This list included South Africa’s Hashim Amla and Graeme Smith. It also included Australia’s Matthew Hayden and New Zealand’s Daniel Vettori. Women cricketers Sana Mir from Pakistan and Sarah Taylor from England were also included. The total number of ICC Hall of Famers now stands at 122.
A voting panel selected the inductees. The panel comprised former Hall of Famers, ICC officials, and members of the global cricket media.
Dhoni’s First Response
In his first remarks after the induction, Dhoni shared his appreciation for the honour:
“It is an honour to be named in the ICC Hall of Fame. This honour recognises the contributions of cricketers across generations and from all over the world. To have your name remembered alongside such all-time greats is a wonderful feeling. It is something that I will cherish forever.”
Stellar Career and Achievements
Dhoni’s cricketing journey has been one of the most decorated in the sport’s modern era. He remains the only captain in the history of the game to have won all three ICC white-ball trophies. These include the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup (2007). There is also the ICC Cricket World Cup (2011) and the ICC Champions Trophy (2013).

- Tests: 90 matches, 4,876 runs at an average of 38.08, 256 catches, 38 stumpings
- ODIs: 350 matches, 10,773 runs at 50.57, 321 catches, 123 stumpings

Under his leadership, India also held the top spot in the ICC Test rankings for 18 consecutive months. This streak started in December 2009.

Sharing History with Fellow Inductees
Dhoni has shared the field with all five male cricketers inducted this year. Notably, he played alongside Matthew Hayden during the latter’s stint with the Chennai Super Kings in the IPL. His inclusion makes him the 11th Indian to enter the Hall of Fame.
Previous Indian legends honoured include Kapil Dev, Sachin Tendulkar, and Sunil Gavaskar. Other legends are Rahul Dravid, Anil Kumble, Virender Sehwag, and Bishan Singh Bedi, among others.

The Hall of Fame was launched in 2009 as part of the ICC’s centenary year. It honours cricketers who have left a lasting impact on the sport. Players become eligible five years after retirement from international cricket, ensuring a considered and reflective selection process.
