Unraveling the Pahalgam Terror Attack: Who Were the Perpetrators and How Did They Strike?
The recent Pahalgam terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir claimed the lives of 26 innocent civilians. It has triggered a nationwide outcry. There is also an intense investigation. Authorities are now piecing together how the attack was carried out. They are determining who was behind it. They are also investigating what external influences may have been at play.
According to initial findings, the attackers included both local and foreign militants. Intelligence agencies have identified the suspects as individuals who recently crossed over from Pakistan. Sketches based on eyewitness accounts match known infiltrators whose images were captured following a previous encounter in the Valley.
The identified individuals include Asif Fauji from Shopian and Suleman Shah. Abu Talha is also identified as a mid-level commander from Pakistan’s designated terrorist organization, Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT). The Lashkar affiliate, The Resistance Front (TRF), claimed responsibility for the carnage. This aligns with its known pattern of orchestrating targeted killings in the region.
Investigators believe the attack was planned in February in Rawalkot, a region in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). During that period, extremist groups like Lashkar-e-Taiba and Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) celebrated Kashmir Solidarity Day. Leaders of Hamas, a Palestinian militant group, were reportedly invited to this gathering, signaling potential ideological and strategic collaborations.
This connection gained further traction when Hamas representatives were hosted at Jaish’s headquarters in Bahawalpur. Their ceremonial welcome reportedly involved horses and luxury vehicles. This highlighted an unusual level of cooperation between South Asian and Middle Eastern militant outfits.
Unlike previous attacks, this group is believed to have taken a highly unconventional and risky route to Pahalgam. They possibly moved from Rajouri-Poonch through Doda-Kishtwar and the Wadhawan Valley—areas less monitored than traditional infiltration corridors. This deviation from known routes suggests a higher level of training, possibly from Pakistan’s Special Services Group (SSG).
The involvement of an old Kashmiri militant, Adil Gurri, is also being investigated. Gurri reportedly went to Pakistan in 2018 and is believed to have recently returned. His presence may have facilitated local logistics and support for the attackers.
Security agencies continue to analyze digital, forensic, and human intelligence to establish the full extent of this transnational conspiracy.
