On Day 1 of the first Test against England at Headingley on Friday, Yashaswi Jaiswal scored a century. Shubhman Gill also showcased his talent with a century. India stood at 359 for 3 at stumps on day 1 of the Anderson-Tendulkar trophy.

Indian Batsman Demonstrate Dominance

In the first session, Jaiswal and KL Rahul had a 91 run partnership. However, the session ended positively for England. They took two wickets in five balls. India debutant B Sai Sudharsan was dismissed for a four-ball duck. There was plenty of time for India to gain an advantage. The team proved this in later sessions.

This was Shubhman Gill’s first test match as the captain and crucial in the eyes of fans and critics alike. Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli stepped away from the red ball format. But it was even more special for Gill. It was his maiden century as a captain. This achievement puts him in the list of Indian skippers who scored a century on their captaincy debut. This elite list includes Vijay Hazare, Sunil Gavaskar, Dilip Vengsarkar, and Virat Kohli.

India continued to dominate in the match. Rishabh Pant joined the game. He combined his adventurous style with Gill’s elegant, assured style. He scored his 16th Test fifty and completed 3,000 runs in the format.

At the end of the opening day, the visitors stood at 359 for 3. Gill was unbeaten on 127. Pant was unbeaten on 65. It was a sensational day for India, and a momentous occasion especially for Shubhman Gill.
