Ever wondered what cricketers eat during their match breaks? Do players actually drink tea during the tea break? England top-order batter Ollie Pope decided to satiate the curiosity of fans. In a video shared by Sky Sports, Pope offered some insights into his eating habits during matches.
Meals Depend on the Day’s Action
Ollie Pope said that the players’ eating habits highly depend on whether they are out on the field or not. He revealed that the lunch menu for the England cricket team usually consists of high-protein and carb-rich meals. “We generally like chicken, fish, or maybe some steak with pasta. We try to fuel up as much as we can,” Pope said, describing a typical lunch spread.
But if he is out batting, Pope does not eat heavy meals in breaks. “For me, if I am batting though, I don’t actually eat a lot. For some reason, your body just doesn’t want to get too much in.”
He prefers to go for lighter snacks in such a situation. It is just enough to refuel the body but not feel post-meal heaviness. “So I have a protein shake and a banana. If I am batting all day, then I will get to the end of the day barely having eaten a thing, just because it’s quite hard to get it in, so you fuel up at the end of the day,” he added.

Do Tea Breaks Include Tea?
Talking about the tea break, Pope cleared the air that it is not always about sipping tea. “Some do [prefer taking tea],” he said. “I normally have coffee. Sometimes, a cup of tea when it’s a rain delay or something.”
Pope in India vs England Series
Pope has been a consistent presence in England’s line-up during their ongoing five-match home Test series against India. He made headlines with a brilliant 106 off 137 balls at Headingley. He played a crucial role in England’s five-wicket win in the first match of the series. Since then, he has struggled to put up big scores. A composed 44 off 104 at Lord’s stands out as his next best.
England now leads the series 2-1 after a hard-fought 22-run victory at Lord’s – the iconic ‘Home of Cricket’. The fourth match is set to take place at Old Tafford. England’s squad for the fourth test against India includes key players. Ben Stokes is the captain, with Jofra Archer, Gus Atkinson, and Jacob Bethell. Other members include Harry Brook, Brydon Carse, and Zak Crawley. Liam Dawson, Ben Duckett, and Ollie Pope are also part of the team. Joe Root, Jamie Smith, Josh Tongue, and Chris Woakes complete the squad.
