Akhadas Leave from Mahakumbh, Pilgrims Can Now Plan as Crowds Recede

Experience the wonder of Mahakumbh 2025! As Akhadas leave they pave the way for everyone to explore this spiritual journey. Don’t miss out!

The grand spectacle of Mahakumbh 2025 observed a significant transition on Friday. The Akhadas, including the revered Naga sadhus, formally started departing from the mela grounds. Their presence had been a major attraction since the event began on January 13. It concluded as per tradition after the three Amrit Snans (royal baths).

As per age-old customs, the Akhadas do not stay at the Sangam banks after completing their royal bathing rituals. They observed this tradition by starting to vacate their camps on Dashami (February 7). This marked the end of their participation in the spiritual gathering. Before leaving, the sadhus performed their final rituals. They relocated the Isht Devs (presiding deities) from under the Dharma Dhwaj (religious flag) into a dedicated sanctum. This was followed by the ceremonial Purnahuti Havan.

Senior Digambar (sky-clad) sadhus played a key role in the departure. They retrieved the Surya Prakash (sacred spear) kept under the Dharma Dhwaj. The sadhus then loosened the ceremonial rope. They carried the spear on foot to their Akhada’s permanent office. Once the rituals were complete, the saints returned to their camps. They bathed, dressed, and partook in a symbolic meal of ‘Kadhi Pakora’. They did this before leaving Prayagraj. This scene unfolded across prominent Akhadas like Niranjani, Anand, Juna, Awahan, Agni, Mahanirvani, and Atal.

Similarly, at Udasin and Nirmal Akhadas, the religious flags were respectfully taken down. Belongings were sent to their city headquarters after traditional prayers. The sadhus expressed a sense of melancholy in dismantling their camps. They also conveyed relief and gratitude for the successful completion of Mahakumbh 2025. This event drew crores of devotees for the holy Amrit Snan.

The Sanyasi Akhadas will now stay in Varanasi until Holi (March 14). Mahant Harigiri is the patron of Juna Akhada and general secretary of the Akhil Bharatiya Akhada Parishad. According to him, they will then move to their respective destinations. Meanwhile, the Vairagi Akhadas are set to leave for their regions after February 10. Before leaving Prayagraj, all sadhus offered their final prayers. They bowed before the sacred Ganga and sought blessings before their journey ahead.

With the Akhadas’ departure, the crowds at Mahakumbh are expected to thin. This change provides an opportune moment for pilgrims and visitors. They can plan their trips with greater ease.
