Passengers Evacuated Safely After Mid-Air Security Scare

On Friday, June 13, an Air India flight had to make an emergency landing shortly after takeoff. The plane was traveling from Phuket, Thailand, to New Delhi. This emergency was due to a bomb threat onboard. The flight, designated AI 379, was carrying 156 passengers.

Airport officials confirmed that the aircraft landed safely back at Phuket International Airport after circling the Andaman Sea. All passengers were promptly evacuated in accordance with standard emergency procedures.

The Boeing aircraft departed Phuket at 9:30 a.m. local time (0230 GMT), bound for the Indian capital. Shortly into the flight, crew members were alerted to a potential bomb threat. Following protocol, the pilot opted to return to Phuket, where the aircraft was safely grounded.

Tracking data from Flightradar24 showed the plane completing a wide loop before returning to the departure airport.

Airports of Thailand (AOT) oversees airport operations in the country. They did not disclose further details regarding the nature of the bomb threat. The origin of the bomb threat remains undisclosed. Air India has not yet issued an official statement on the matter.

The Indian Embassy in Thailand confirmed it is in contact with Thai authorities. They aim to ensure the safety of all Indian nationals. They are also monitoring developments closely.

A Troubling Week for Indian Aviation

The emergency landing happened just a day after a major tragedy. An Air India flight crashed near Ahmedabad shortly after takeoff. This crash resulted in over 240 fatalities. Although the two incidents are not officially linked, they have raised fresh concerns about aviation security and crisis preparedness.

India’s Struggle with Frequent Bomb Hoaxes

India has seen a significant rise in bomb threats in recent months. In 2024 alone, nearly 1,000 hoax threats targeted airlines and airports. These incidents were reported in just the first ten months. This is almost ten times the number recorded the previous year.

Security experts have urged authorities to improve threat detection mechanisms and public awareness. They warn that such repeated disruptions not only cause panic but also strain emergency response systems.

Authorities in Thailand are investigating the threat, while the aircraft remains grounded for inspection. No explosives have been found as of now, and the passengers are safe. Further updates are expected following a joint review by Thai and Indian aviation authorities.
