Amid political instability, Bangladesh is facing a potential coup plot within its military ranks. Sources in Dhaka indicate that a conspiracy is brewing at the Bangladesh Army’s General Headquarters (GHQ).
Lt Gen Faizur Rahman is the Quarter Master General and a former DGFI officer. He has come under strict surveillance by Army Chief General Waker uz Zaman. Faizur Rahman is known for his pro-Jamaat sympathies. Allegedly, he has links to Pakistan. He was reportedly holding secret meetings without the Army Chief’s knowledge. His goal was to gather support against him.
In early March, Faizur attempted to convene a meeting with key divisional GOCs. Sources confirm this occurred. As soon as the Army Chief’s secretariat was alerted, Gen Zaman issued a warning to senior officers. Following this, top officials distanced themselves from the meeting, prompting the Chief to place Faizur under surveillance.
Reports suggest that between January and February 2025, Lt Gen Faizur Rahman held multiple meetings with Jamaat-e-Islami leaders. He also met with Pakistani diplomats. These interactions raised suspicions, leading to increased monitoring by military intelligence.
The Army Chief’s decisive action signals a firm response to any potential destabilization efforts within the armed forces. However, the situation remains tense as authorities closely track Faizur Rahman’s activities to prevent any further escalation.
