Bangladesh Requests Interpol Red Notices for Sheikh Hasina and 11 Others

Dhaka, April 19, 2025 — In a major legal development, Bangladeshi authorities have approached Interpol. They want to issue red notices against 12 individuals. This group includes former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. These actions were reported by a leading national media outlet.

Hasina Reportedly in India Since Uprising

Sheikh Hasina, now 77, is believed to have taken refuge in India since August 5, 2024. Her departure came in the aftermath of a massive student-led movement that ultimately ended her party’s 16-year tenure in power.

Police Confirm Legal Basis for Request

The Bangladesh Police’s National Central Bureau (NCB) submitted the request for international alerts. This unit is responsible for coordinating with Interpol. A senior police official confirmed that the application is rooted in ongoing legal matters. These matters are either under court direction or stem from investigations.

What Is a Red Notice?

A red notice serves as an international alert urging member countries to locate and provisionally arrest individuals wanted for prosecution. It also applies to those wanted to serve a sentence. It is not an arrest warrant, though facilitates extradition or legal action. This occurs in coordination with local authorities once a suspect’s location is identified.

Political Implications of the Move

This request marks a significant escalation in the government’s pursuit of former political leaders. If approved, the red notices would take a bold step. They aim to bring back prominent figures to face judicial proceedings in Bangladesh.
