Sheikh Hasina Sentenced to 6 months of jail by International Crimes Tribunal
Former Bangladesh Prime Minister, Sheikh Hasina, has been sentenced to six months in prison. This was for a contempt of court case by the International Crimes Tribunal on Wednesday, July 2.
Since the leader fled Bangladesh about a year ago, this is the first case she has been sentenced in.
The verdict was issued by a three-member bench of the International Crimes Tribunal-1, headed by Justice Md Golam Mortuza Mozumder. The tribunal also sentenced Shakil Akand Bulbul of Gobindaganj in Gaibandha. He received a two-month prison sentence in the same case, apart from Hasina.
In June this year, the prosecutors at the International Crimes Tribunal formally charged Hasina. They accused her of crimes against humanity during the mass protest last year. Mohammad Tajul Islam, the chief prosecutor at ICT alleged that Hasina engineered a “systemic attack” on protests against her government.
According to a UN rights office report, around 1,400 people were killed between July 15 and August 15, 2024. Even after the fall of the past regime, retaliatory violence continued and most lives were lost.

The former Bangladesh PM has denied all charges. Her defence lawyer, Amir Hossain, told journalists that he would present “arguments to seek her discharge from these allegations”.
After the collapse of the Awami League Government and her ouster from Bangladesh, Hasina arrived in India in August 2024. She is currently living in a safe house in New Delhi.
