Ceasefire announced after Iran hit US base in Qatar

The Israel-Iran conflict was raging on with no end in sight. Escalation seemed inevitable especially after the US entered the conflict. In Operation Midnight Hammer, the US had struck three Iranian nuclear sites. Iran retaliated with a barrage of missiles on the American Al Udeid air base in Qatar. In a total turn of events, Trump has now announced a Ceasefire between Israel and Iran. He has called it an end to their “12-day war”.

The sudden ceasefire

In a matter of hours, Iran struck the US air base in Doha. The US president announced a ceasefire in the Iran-Israel conflict in a post on social media. President Trump’s statement on social media said, “CONGRATULATIONS TO EVERYONE! It has been fully agreed by and between Israel and Iran that there will be a Complete and Total CEASEFIRE (in approximately 6 hours from now, when Israel and Iran have wound down and completed their in progress, final missions!), for 12 hours, at which point the War will be considered, ENDED!”

He added that Iran will start the ceasefire and Israel will follow upon the 12th hour. Both sides will remain peaceful and respectful throughout. Congratulating both the countries, he declared this would be the end of “the 12-day war”.

Yesterday, Trump was calling for regime change in Iran. Today, he ended his post with “God bless Israel. God bless Iran, God bless the Middle East. God bless the United States of America. GOD BLESS THE WORLD!”

In an interview with NBC News, Trump said he thinks the ceasefire is “unlimited” and is “going to go forever”

Iran agrees to ceasefire

Just a few days ago, the supreme leader of Iran, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, made a declaration. He stated that Iran will not accept an ‘imposed peace’. But imposed peace has turned to agreed peace. The Iranian Foreign Minister, Seyed Abbas Araghchi, suggested that a ceasefire has begun. He posted on X: “The military operations of our powerful Armed Forces to punish Israel for its aggression continued. They lasted until the very last minute, at 4am. Together with all Iranians, I thank our brave Armed Forces …”

He had earlier confirmed that if Israel stops military aggression by 4 am, Iran will also cease its operations.

Israel remains quiet

The Israeli government and its officials have not been in touch with the media. They have not acknowledged Trump’s announcement publicly. Reports say that there is a gag order in place for all the officials. Any official statement we get is expected directly from the Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

However, a senior White House official said Israel had agreed under certain conditions. Iran must refrain from launching further attacks. Trump brokered the deal in a call with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. This aligns with Netanyahu’s Sunday announcement. He stated that Israel was “very, very close to completing” its goals. This signalled they were ready to wrap things up.

Qatar’s role after sustaining attack

After the attack in Qatar, the country said it reserves the right to retaliate against Iran. It has condemned the attack, calling it a violation of Qatar’s sovereignty. Out of the 19 missiles launched, Qatar has reportedly intercepted 18 with no casualties. But now, sources report that Qatar also had a role to play in the ceasefire. Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani  secured Iran’s agreement in a call with Tehran.

The ground reality

In Iran, even though ceasefire had been announced, sounds of massive blasts still echoed in Tehran. The country’s air defence systems were still battling Israeli attacks. Israel had issued evacuation warnings for several parts of Tehran, after the ceasefire announcement.

Were these the final missions Trump referred to or is the ceasefire going to fall through? Trump has tried to mediate for ceasefire in vain in Gaza and Ukraine. Will this be the President’s one victory?
