NASA astronaut Sunita Williams’ long-awaited return from the International Space Station (ISS) has been postponed once more. This is due to a delay in SpaceX’s Crew-10 mission. Williams and fellow astronaut Butch Wilmore originally planned for an eight-day mission. However, they have now spent nine months aboard the ISS. This is due to safety concerns with Boeing’s Starliner spacecraft.
The Crew-10 mission was intended to bring a new team of astronauts to the ISS. It would also allow Williams and Wilmore to return. The launch was scheduled but was scrubbed due to a technical issue. The problem was with a ground support clamp arm on the Falcon 9 rocket. NASA has now set the next possible launch date for Saturday, pending a final review.
Williams and Wilmore will begin their journey back to Earth after March 20 if Crew-10 lifts off as planned. The new crew heading to the ISS includes NASA astronauts Anne McClain and Nichole Ayers. It also features JAXA’s Takuya Onishi and Roscosmos’ Kirill Peskov.
Despite the extended stay, NASA has assured that astronaut safety remains the top priority. The ISS is well-stocked with supplies, ensuring that the current crew can continue their mission without issues. Williams’ extended time in space strengthens her legacy. She is a veteran astronaut, known for her extensive time spent on spacewalks.
NASA had initially advanced the Crew-10 launch by two weeks following requests from former U.S. President Donald Trump and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk to expedite the return of Williams and Wilmore. However, technical challenges have continued to delay their homecoming.
