Strong Rebuttal of Taiwan to Bangladesh and China Statement

Taipei, March 31, 2025: Taiwan has issued a strong rebuttal to Bangladesh. This was in response to its joint statement with China. The statement endorsed the “One China Principle” and dismissed Taiwan’s sovereignty. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) in Taipei condemned the statement. It declared that Taiwan is an independent and sovereign nation. It is not subordinate to the People’s Republic of China.

The response was sharp. It came after Muhammad Yunus, Chief Advisor to the Interim Government of Bangladesh, met with Chinese President Xi Jinping. Their meeting took place in Beijing from March 27 to 29. During the visit, the two nations released a joint statement on March 28. The statement affirmed Bangladesh’s support for the “One China Principle.” It also labeled Taiwan as an “inalienable part of China.”

In a press release, Taiwan’s MOFA “solemnly refuted” the claim, stating that it distorts the reality of Taiwan’s sovereign status. “The Republic of China (Taiwan) is a sovereign and independent country. It is not subordinate to the People’s Republic of China. Any statement that distorts Taiwan’s sovereignty cannot alter the internationally recognized status quo across the Taiwan Strait,” the statement read.

The ministry emphasized that Taiwan will firmly defend its national sovereignty and dignity. It will work with democratic allies to promote regional peace, stability, and development. Taiwan also urged Bangladesh to adopt a more “pragmatic and open approach” to bilateral relations. This is especially true in trade and economic cooperation. Such cooperation aims to promote democracy and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific region.

The diplomatic clash arises. Beijing is increasing efforts to isolate Taiwan diplomatically. They pressure nations to endorse the “One China” stance. Taiwan, however, maintains that it will resist such attempts and strengthen its international partnerships to safeguard its sovereignty.
