Cloudburst in J&K’s Kathua: Heavy Rains in Jodh Ghati Village Leaves Seven Dead, Dozens Injured

Another cloudburst hit J&K in a remote village in Kathua district on Sunday. Seven bodies reportedly found dead during rescue operations leaving several Injured.

The calamity hit Jodh Ghati village of Rajbagh and Janglote in two separate incidents. This occurred amidst heavy rains in the district during the intervening nights of Saturday and Sunday. 

The Army deployed helicopters on Sunday. It also deployed several columns in the cloudburst-hit Jodh Ghati village of Jammu and Kashmir’s Kathua district, officials said. Reportedly, five people died in the cloudburst incident that happened in Jodh Ghati village. Two others were found dead in the landslide. Triggered by heavy rains in the Janglote area.

Disaster Response, Forces in Action

Post incidents, a joint team of police and State Disaster Response Force reached the affected areas, carrying out rescue operations. “So far, bodies of four persons have been recovered. Six others were rescued in an injured condition. They are being shifted to the hospital,” officials said. People in the affected area are requested to stay from water bodies for their safety, The officials noted.

Condolences by Top Leaders

Union home minister Amit Shah also expressed condolences on the tragic incident while speaking with J&K LG and CM. “Spoke with the Lieutenant Governor and Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir regarding the cloudburst in Kathua. The local administration is carrying out relief and rescue operations. NDRF teams have also been rushed to the site.

Assured every support from the Modi government. We stand firmly behind our sisters and brothers of J&K,” he wrote on X.

Union minister Jitendra Singh wrote in a post on X. He stated, “Spoken to SSP Kathua Sh Shobhit Saxena after receiving information about a cloud burst in the Janglote area. 4 casualties reported. In addition, damage has occurred to the Railway track and National Highway. Police Station Kathua is affected. The civilian Administration, Military, and Paramilitary have swung into action. The situation is being continuously monitored. My sincere condolences to the families of the deceased”.

Chief minister Omar Abdullah has expressed grief over the incident. It caused the tragic loss of lives in several parts of district Kathua. “He conveyed heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and prayed for the speedy recovery of the injured. He assured all necessary assistance”, said in a post on X.

Office of LG J&K tweeted, “Deeply anguished by the loss of lives. The rain-triggered landslides in several areas of Kathua are devastating. The tragedy is mind-numbing. Briefed Union Home Minister Amit Shah on rescue and relief operations by the army, NDRF, SDRF, police & administration”.

Past Incidents of Cloudburst

A deadly disaster was witnessed previously on 14 August in Chosoti village of kishtwar district which killed around 60 people and left 100 injured. Rescue and relief operations there continue with the army, police, NDRF, SDRF, BRO, civil administration, and local volunteers working in high-altitude terrain.
