India Successfully Tests Indigenous Extended-Range Anti-Submarine Rocket (ERASR) from INS Kavaratti; Naval Induction Imminent

India has completed user trials of the Indigenous Extended-Range Anti-Submarine Rocket (ERASR). These tests were conducted from the frontline warship INS Kavaratti between June 23 and July 7, 2025. This achievement marks a significant step forward in strengthening India’s maritime anti-submarine warfare capabilities.

The ERASR system was created and developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). The Armament Research & Development Establishment (ARDE), Pune, was specifically responsible. They collaborated with the High Energy Materials Research Laboratory (HEMRL) and the Naval Science & Technological Laboratory (NSTL). The rocket is launched from the Indigenous Rocket Launcher (IRL) installed aboard Indian Naval Ships.

Key Features of ERASR:

  • Fully indigenous anti-submarine warfare rocket
  • Fired from the onboard IRL of Indian Naval Ships
  • Twin-rocket motor configuration for a wide range envelope
  • High accuracy and consistency across various range parameters
  • Equipped with an indigenously developed Electronic Time Fuze

During the successful user evaluation, 17 ERASR rockets were test-fired at varying ranges. This validated all mission-critical parameters. These included range performance, fuze functionality, and warhead effectiveness.

Production and Induction

Bharat Dynamics Limited (Hyderabad) and Solar Defence & Aerospace Limited (Nagpur) are the designated production partners for the ERASR system. Following the successful completion of all user trials, induction into the Indian Navy is expected shortly.

Leadership Reactions

Raksha Mantri Shri Rajnath Singh congratulated the DRDO. He also congratulated the Indian Navy and all industry partners. Their efforts led to the successful development and trials of the ERASR system. He emphasized that its induction will significantly enhance the Indian Navy’s offensive and defensive capabilities.

Dr. Samir V. Kamat, Secretary of the Department of Defence R&D and Chairman of DRDO, also commended the dedicated teams. These teams were behind the ERASR’s successful development and trials.
