Bollywood’s Richest Family- not Kapoors, Khans or Bacchans; Not Even a Family of Actors

When it comes to the biggest names in Bollywood, people think of the Khans, the Kapoors and the Bachchans. None of them hold the title of the richest family in the Indian film industry. Instead, the distinction belongs to a family which does not have any leading actor at all. The Hurun India Rich List states that Bhushan Kumar and the T-Series family possess this crown. They have a staggering net worth of over Rs 10,000 crore.

Humble Beginnings

The family came to Delhi as refugees. They arrived from the Jhang region of West Punjab after the Hindu-Muslim riots during the partition of India in 1947. Gulshan Kumar and his father worked as fruit juice vendors in the streets of Daryaganj, Delhi. But their fate changed when they bought a small cassette shop in the 70s.

From there, Gulshan grew to become India’s “Cassette King”. He started his own record label, Super Cassettes, which developed into T-Series. Today, the company owns a giant movie studio. It is one of the largest in the country. The company also has several other subsidiaries and an acting school in Noida.

Virtues with wealth

Gulshan Kumar was a religious man. He ran a free of cost meal service. In this service, free meals are offered as prasad to all the devotees visiting Vaishno Devi Temple. Even after the father’s demise in 1997, the service still continues till today and is well managed by the son.

Owners of T-Series

Bhushan Kumar is the son of T-Series founder Gulshan Kumar. He currently heads the company alongside his uncle. Kishan Kumar is his uncle and also the chairman. The Kumar family, though not actors themselves, has built one of the most powerful empires in Indian cinema. They excel in both music and film production.

T-Series started as a music label. It has grown into a film production giant. The company is responsible for backing some of the biggest hits in Indian cinema. These include Baahubali 2: The Conclusion, Dangal, 3 Idiots, Aashiqui 2, Bajrangi Bhaijaan, War, and Chennai Express.

Further, Bhushan’s wife, actor-director Divya Khossla, is also active in the entertainment business. His siblings, Khushali Kumar and Tulsi Kumar, contribute to the brand’s visibility and reach.

Other Big Names in Indian cinema

After the Kumar family, the Chopra family is the second richest in Bollywood. They own Yash Raj Films and BR Films. Their estimated net worth is Rs 8,000 crore. Shah Rukh Khan, the ‘King of Bollywood’, comes in third on the list.

If we look in the South, some of the richest film families are from the Telugu industry. The Konidela-Allu family includes Chiranjeevi, Pawan Kalyan, Ram Charan and Allu Arjun. Together, they have an estimated wealth of Rs 4,000 crore. Then there’s the Akkineni-Daggubati family. It features stars like Nagarjuna, Naga Chaitanya, Venkatesh and Rana Daggubati. Their combined net worth is over Rs 5,000 crore. Still, none of them come close to the Rs 10,000 crore empire of Bhushan Kumar’s family.
