In response to the brutal terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, which claimed 26 lives, India executed a calculated three-pronged pressure campaign against Pakistan. As part of this effort, the Indian Navy elevated its operational readiness to unprecedented levels.
Massive Naval Mobilization in Arabian Sea
The Indian Navy deployed a formidable force of 36 combat vessels. This group included the aircraft carrier INS Vikrant. Sources revealed this information during Operation Sindoor. This strategic deployment was significantly larger than the six-ship contingent used in the 1971 conflict. It was concentrated in the Arabian Sea, close to Karachi, Pakistan’s primary naval hub.
Carrier Battle Group at the Core
INS Vikrant spearheaded the deployment, flanked by 8 to 10 frontline warships. This marked one of the Indian Navy’s most extensive real-time operational maneuvers outside of peacetime drills. The fleet was supported by seven destroyers. These ships were equipped with BrahMos missiles, MRSAMs, and Varunastra torpedoes. They are capable of engaging threats across air, surface, and sub-surface domains.
Stealth and Sub-Surface Capabilities
The deployment also featured seven stealth frigates. This included the newly commissioned INS Tushil. Six submarines operated in coordination to bolster underwater surveillance and strike capabilities. Fast attack craft extended the operational reach. Missile boats also contributed significantly. Together, they collectively surpassed Pakistan’s fleet size of fewer than 30 warships.
The overwhelming presence of Indian naval assets reportedly forced Pakistan’s warships to remain docked in Karachi harbor. NAVAREA warnings were issued to civilian vessels due to the elevated maritime threat. This led to commercial ships rerouting away from the region, highlighting the tension.
Operation Sindoor: A Coordinated Military Response
Launched on May 7, Operation Sindoor was India’s direct military response to the Pahalgam massacre. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh informed an all-party meeting. He said that precision strikes on terror infrastructure in Pakistan and PoK eliminated over 100 terrorists and their facilitators.
The escalation concluded with both sides agreeing to a ceasefire on May 10. However, India’s naval dominance displayed a strong deterrent message. It showed India’s readiness to act with force, precision, and scale.
