India’s military operation following the Pahalgam massacre—Operation Sindoor—has unmasked Pakistan’s aggressive tactics. It has also highlighted Turkey’s direct involvement in aiding Islamabad with drones and military advisors.
Turkish Drone Involvement Confirmed
According to top intelligence sources, Turkey supplied over 350 drones to Pakistan for use against India during the conflict. These unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), including Bayraktar TB2 and YIHA models, were reportedly deployed for reconnaissance. They were used for target designation. Additionally, they even conducted kamikaze-style attacks aimed at Indian military positions and logistical routes.
Two Turkish Military Operatives Killed
As per field reports, two Turkish military personnel were killed during India’s counter-operations. This marks a rare and significant escalation, confirming direct Turkish military presence in active coordination roles alongside the Pakistani Army.
Drone Attack Scale and Strategy
The largest drone wave was launched by Pakistan on the nights of May 7 and 8. Nearly 300 to 400 drones targeted Indian military infrastructure across critical zones. These zones ranged from Leh to Sir Creek.
Colonel Sofiya Qureshi stated during an Operation Sindoor briefing that Asisguard Songar drones were among those recovered from crash sites. These drones are manufactured in Turkey. The motive, she explained, was to probe India’s air defence capability and gather tactical data.
Turkey-Pakistan Defence Nexus Deepens
Turkey’s defence cooperation with Pakistan has surged in recent years. It encompasses not just hardware transfers but also military training and operational support. The rapid expansion of these ties has sparked concern within Indian strategic circles. This concern grew after recent events revealed the operational deployment of Turkish advisors during an Indo-Pak border escalation.
Economic Links Fueling Drone Proliferation
Experts suggest that increased Indian exports to Turkey—particularly in metals, electronics, and automotive components—have inadvertently bolstered Ankara’s defence production capabilities. These industrial exports are believed to have contributed to Turkey’s accelerated UAV manufacturing capacity. Some of them have now been turned against Indian interests.
India Responds on the Information Front
In a significant digital retaliation, India has blocked access to Turkish broadcaster TRT’s X (formerly Twitter) account. This decision was due to its biased coverage and support for Islamabad during the conflict. The move came after Chinese state media accounts, such as Xinhua and Global Times, were blocked. These accounts were found to be amplifying Pakistani disinformation campaigns during the hostilities.
Escalation Beyond Borders
The revelations from Operation Sindoor underscore a shifting regional dynamic where conflicts are no longer confined to bilateral borders. Foreign actors like Turkey are stepping in. The Indian government is now preparing to recalibrate its foreign policy. It is also enhancing its defence readiness for multi-front engagements in the future.
