Successful Interception in Western Indian Ocean
The Indian Navy’s frontline frigate, INS Tarkash, is operating under the Western Naval Command. It has successfully intercepted and seized over 2,500 kg of narcotics in the Western Indian Ocean. This operation highlights the Navy’s ongoing efforts to combat maritime crime and enhance regional security.
Maritime Security Operations and International Collaboration
INS Tarkash has been actively engaged in Maritime Security Operations since its deployment in January 2025. It supports Combined Task Force (CTF) 150. This task force operates under the Combined Maritime Forces (CMF) headquartered in Bahrain. The warship is participating in the multi-national joint operation, Anzac Tiger, aimed at countering illicit maritime activities.
Intelligence-Led Interception and Seizure
On March 31, 2025, INS Tarkash was patrolling the region. The ship received intelligence from Indian Navy P8I reconnaissance aircraft. Suspicious vessels were involved in narcotics smuggling. Acting swiftly, the warship changed course to intercept the suspected vessels. In coordination with the Maritime Operations Centre in Mumbai, INS Tarkash deployed its integral helicopter. The helicopter monitored the situation and tracked additional suspect vessels.
A specialist boarding team conducted a thorough search of a suspect dhow. The team included Marine Commandos. This search led to the discovery of narcotics concealed in sealed packets. The seizure included 2,386 kg of hashish and 121 kg of heroin. These drugs were hidden within different compartments of the vessel. The authorities took control of the dhow and its crew. They carried out further questioning to gather intelligence on related smuggling networks.
Strengthening Maritime Security in the Indian Ocean
This successful operation reinforces the Indian Navy’s commitment to maritime security. It underscores its role in disrupting illicit trafficking activities in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR). Through multinational collaborations and strategic operations, India continues to ensure security, stability, and prosperity across international waters.
