Key Military Acquisitions Under ‘Make in India’ Initiative worth Rs 1.05 Lakh Crore

The Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) operates under Defence Minister Rajnath Singh. It has accorded Acceptance of Necessity (AoN) to 10 capital acquisition proposals. These military acquisition proposals amount to approx. Rs 1.05 lakh crore through indigenous sourcing.

The proposal includes the procurement of Armoured Recovery Vehicles and an Electronic Warfare System. It also covers the Integrated Common Inventory Management System and Surface-to-Air Missiles (SAMs). According to a press release by the Ministry of Defence, these will provide higher mobility and effective air defence. They will ensure better supply chain management. These systems will augment the operational preparedness of the Armed Forces.

Moored Mines will also be procured. Mine Counter Measure Vessels will join them. Additionally, Super Rapid Gun Mount will be acquired. Submersible Autonomous Vessels are included. They will help mitigate potential risks posed to the Naval and Merchant Vessels

The biggest feature of this procurement is that it is done under  the Buy (Indian-Indigenously Designed Developed and Manufactured) category.

Key Weapons Currently Being Procured by India

  • Armoured Recovery Vehicles: is a specialized military vehicle designed for towing, repairing, and recovering armored vehicles damaged on the battlefield.
  • Electronic Warfare System: are used to exploit the electromagnetic spectrum. They disrupt or deny its use by an enemy. At the same time, they protect one’s own use of it.
  • Integrated Common Inventory Management System: is used for managing and tracking a wide range of military stores. It includes equipment, ammunition, and vehicles of the three forces. It will improve procurement efficiency.
  • Surface-to-Air Missiles: are primarily used to destroy aerial targets like aircraft, helicopters, and other missiles from the ground or sea. They are a key component of modern air defense systems.
  • Moored Mines: are primarily used to target submarines and surface ships by remaining at a specific depth in the water. This will give India the ability to block sea routes so that enemy ships cannot reach our ports.
  • Mine Counter Measure Vessels: are naval ships designed to locate, classify, and neutralize naval mines.
  • Super Rapid Gun Mount: serve as the main gun system on Indian Navy warships. They provide anti-missile and anti-aircraft defense. They are designed for a high rate of fire. They ensure accuracy when engaging multiple targets. This includes fast-moving threats such as missiles and attack crafts.
  • Submersible Autonomous Vessels: These are small unmanned submarines, capable of carrying out intelligence surveillance and espionage under water.

Understanding the ‘Buy Indian’ Procurement Category

It means “Indigenously Designed, Developed, and Manufactured”. Thus, all these weapon systems will be of indigenous production. The investment of Rs. 1.05 lakh crore will flow into domestic companies. This will help boost indigenous defence technology and production. It is another major boost to the ‘Make in India’ and ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ campaign.
